About Olive | |
|
Olive is an adorable, fluffy little baby that came to us after being dropped off at a local shelter suffering from two broken hind legs and a fractured pelvis. The shelter was going to have to euthanize her, but she was so sweet and happy despite her injuries, we chose to take her in and have her treated.
We immediately took Olive in to be examined and x-rayed by our regular veterinarian, who determined by the amount of healing already going on in her bones that her fractures were several weeks old. Our vet felt it would be best if an orthopedic specialist evaluated her injuries and determined what needed to be done for her, so we were referred to the Akron Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center.
After examining Olive and her x-rays, the orthopedic specialist chose not to do surgery on her. He said that because her body was already in an advanced state of healing, that it would be too painful and risky to go in and attempt to surgically repair the damage. Surgical correction would also do nothing to straighten her legs, so regardless, she would be bow-legged in appearance. Here is what the specialist had to say:
"Diagnosis: Healing fractures due to blunt compressive injury of pelvis and rear legs. Surgical Procedure: None recommended. I expect Olive to have an awkward gait and appear to have crooked legs, but to be pain free and functional long-term."
Olive does have crooked back legs, and her gait is a little off in the back, but she has absolutely NO idea she's different from other puppies! She is not in any pain, and can run, play, jump and go up and down stairs without a problem. She is still a little lame in her right hind leg, but the specialist predicts that will continue to improve with time.
As per the specialists instructions, we are currently discouraging Olive from being too rowdy, but are gradually allowing her to become more active over the next week or two.
Despite her rough start to life, Olive is just the happiest, sweetest (and CUTEST!) little baby! We absolutely ADORE her!!! She enjoys running around and playing with her toys, but she's just as happy to cuddle with you on your lap and give you kisses in return for lovin' and belly-rubs! When she's sleepy and ready for puppy naptime, she'll crawl into her bed or her crate and take a snooze. =) She really is an incredible little puppy, and will make a lucky family VERY happy!
Olive is crate-trained and is currently working on house-training. She is a smart little girl, and seems to be picking up going potty outside well!
Olive is approx. 4 months old, currently around 15lbs., and is spayed, microchipped, current on her puppy vaccine series, dewormed and on monthly flea/heartworm prevention. Our vet guesstimates that she will be a nice medium-sized girl at around 30-35lbs. when fully grown. She is such a cute baby... she looks like a Chow, Lab, Shepherd, Collie mix! Whatever she is though, she's super adorable and oh-so sweet!!! =)
Her adoption fee is $200.
