About Paul | |
|
Paul came to us in October as a breeder release, as he was unable to continue to perform his "job," and was therefore deemed expendable. We're just glad that they chose to let us have him, as opposed to simply disposing of him because they could no longer use him.
Paul had a retained testicle, which means one of his testicles was inside his abdomen as opposed to in his scrotum where it's supposed to be. When a testicle is in the abdomen, the body sees it as foreign tissue, and the odds of it developing tumors and becoming cancerous are high. In Paul's case, his retained testicle was grossly deformed, and the size of a lemon. He had to have emergency surgery to neuter him the day after we rescued him, as the tumor was causing swelling in his groin, and making it extremely difficult for him to urinate. He also had a severe urinary tract infection, which was only making matters worse. The good news is that the tumor came back as a Sertoli Cell Tumor, which is quite common in retained testicles. These tumors produce estrogen, which causes reduced sperm production, (which is why he was no longer an effective breeding dog), mammary development, (which he had), and hair loss, (which he had). This type of cancer doesn't typically spread, and removal is considered curative, so Paul is now cancer free! His symptoms secondary to the tumor have all resolved, so now he's looking good and feeling good!
Paul never lived in a home prior to us taking him, and he's done great at adapting to being a house pet! He's decided he LOVES the couch, and can be found snoring there most of the day! He isn't the most confident fellow, so we've been working on building up his self esteem, and making him comfortable in new and different situations. He may get nervous, but he bounces back quickly, and as long as people are around, he's happy! This dog thrives on human attention and interaction. He just wants to be someone's best friend. It's heartbreaking to think he spent the first 5 years of his life desperate for attention, and never received it. Well, he's making up for lost time, and has decided that all people are "his" people. He really is a sweet, silly, happy, mellow, loving creature! We can't say enough nice things about his personality and temperament.
Paul does great with other dogs, and pretty much ignores cats. He's pretty low energy, and his favorite activities are cuddling, being goofy, snoring, farting, and being a couch potato. He walks well (slowly) on a harness, and rides well in the car. He won't jump in, so you do have to lift him up, but once there he lays down and rides quietly. He is working on house training, and while he doesn't really get it yet, he does great with a schedule and being let out regularly. He is crate trained, but it trustworthy outside of it. He will steal other dog's food, so feeding him in it may be best if you have other pups.
Paul is 5 years old, and will be 6 in April. He's a little guy at 45 lbs, and is neutered, microchipped, dewormed, heartworm negative, and on monthly flea/heartworm prevention. We've run a full blood panel on him, and everything came back normal. He did have the typical bulldog issues, so he's also had entropian, (eyelids rolling in and rubbing on his corneas), corrected in both eyes, and has had his nostrils widened to help him breathe better. His soft palate is a little long, but not long enough that our vet felt it was necessary to shorten. He also had a dental, as all of his teeth were either broken off, or worn down to the gumline. He did have to have several teeth extracted, but he's fully recovered and has no issues eating his kibble. (Did we mention that this dog is a food hound?!?)
Paul does have some food sensitivity, and after trying multiple protein sources and ingredient combinations, we've found that he does best with Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach in the lamb and oat variety. This is an over the counter food you can easily order online. He also takes Cosequin joint supplement daily, which seems to have really helped with his occasional limping secondary to some mild arthritis. This is also over the counter, and can be found online.
Because bulldogs are prone to easily overheating, a home with central A/C is required for Paul's adoption. Bracycephalic experience is preferred, but not required.
If you've been looking for a sweet, easy, low key dog to be your companion, Paul may be your guy! He has almost no exercise requirements, and rarely if ever barks. He's just a chill dude! He does seem to enjoy to company of other dogs, so a home with a canine friend might be best for his overall happiness. As mentioned, he ADORES people, so he would love to find a home where someone is home with him more often than not.
Paul's adoption fee is $350. He will come with a supply of his food, Cosequin, and ointment for his nose and skin folds. We use these as needed to keep his nose from getting too dry, and to keep his nasal folds healthy and free of infection.
