About Heidi | |
|
Heidi is a German shepherd puppy that was surrendered to us when she was just 6 weeks old. We received a late-night call from the ER at our animal hospital asking if we could take in a pup that was ill and facing euthanasia. Obviously, we said yes!
Heidi was suffering from vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration secondary to a stomach bug, but thankfully after several days in hospital on IV fluids and medications, she was well enough to be discharged. She has since fully recovered and has had no further medical issues!
Heidi is a typical puppy once she gets to know you, and is very affectionate and playful. She is crate trained and mostly housetrained, but she may have accidents while she adjusts to a new home and schedule. She is leash trained, and rides well in the car. She knows sit, kennel, and wait, and is eager to learn more with her forever family!
Heidi's main issue is that she's a fearful girl that lacks confidence. In an environment where she's comfortable, she's a typical puppy; sweet, sassy, goofy, naughty, and adorable! But in new situations or around new people, she tends to get quite anxious and panicky. Because of this, her forever family would ideally be one with dog experience, (she is not a good match for a first-time owner), and preference will be given to someone with prior GSD experience. A physical fence is required for her adoption. She would do best in a quiet, low traffic home, with kids 12 and older.
Ideally, Heidi would work with a professional trainer to boost her confidence, and to help her and her new parents build trust and learn to communicate. Typical of her breed, Heidi is smart and VERY food motivated! We know she has it in her to be a little braver, but in the event that she's always a little nervous, her family needs to be prepared to love her as she is, and be able and willing to manage her anxiety as best they can. Not all dogs need to be social butterflies, so if you're a bit of a wallflower and prefer to hang out at home and snuggle and watch TV or read a book, Heidi could be your gal!
Heidi is shy around new dogs at first, but is quick to warm up and then loves to play! A confident dog in her new home to help show her the ropes and be a positive role model in her life would be ideal! She is good with cats, and while she occasionally will be an annoying puppy and try to get them to engage with her, she mostly will ignore them.
Heidi is currently 4 months old, around 30 lbs, and is spayed, microchipped, dewormed, up to date on vaccines, and current on monthly flea/tick/heartworm prevention. We guesstimate she'll be around 50-60 lbs when fully grown.
Her adoption fee is $350.
